Christmas is almost upon us, and many people are looking forward to the presents and family. Much like my Jewish friends, I don't celebrate Christmas. Christmas is actually the "Christianized" Pagan holiday, the Winter Solstice.
Jesus was actually an Israelite Jew and he was born on the Jewish New Years (this was the time when censuses were taken and it recalled everyone to their hometowns) which is why Mary and Joseph were going to Bethlehem. The Jewish new year is September or October.
Regardless of Pagan symbolism or when Jesus was born... The odea of the Holiday is not simply Christian but American. It is a national holiday, an American holiday. It doesn't matter of you are a Christian or not, as an American you can celebrate this holiday with your fellow Americans thinking not of Santa Claus or Jesus Christ but of George Washington crossing the Delaware River on Christmas Eve in the dead of Winter during a snow storm at night to surprise Bristish Soldiers and help secure a supposedly free society for is to enjoy. It is a time to enjoy being with friends and family...
So Happy Christmas & have a Merry New Year.
